An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is software used by companies to filter and rank job applications. To ensure your CV gets through this system and reaches recruiters, it’s important to format it properly and include the right content. Here’s how to make an ATS-friendly CV:

1. Use a Simple Format: Keep your CV’s design simple and easy to read. ATS systems may struggle with fancy templates, graphics, or tables, so it’s best to stick to a clean, straightforward format. Use standard fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman, and avoid excessive use of colors or images.


2. Include Keywords: ATS systems scan CVs for specific keywords related to the job description. Carefully read the job listing and include the same terms in your CV. For example, if the job requires “project management” or “data analysis,” make sure those keywords appear in your skills, experience,

 and qualifications.

3. Use Standard Headings: ATS systems recognize standard CV sections, so use traditional headings like “Work Experience,” “Education,” “Skills,” and “Certifications.” Avoid creative headings like “My Career Journey” or “What I’ve Done,” as the system may not understand them.


4. Avoid Fancy Formatting: While it’s tempting to make your CV visually appealing, things like graphics, columns, and tables can confuse ATS software. Stick to basic formatting, such as bullet points, bold text for headings, and consistent font sizes.


5. Save in the Right File Format: ATS systems work best with simple file formats. Save your CV as a .docx or .pdf file, but make sure the PDF is not locked or password-protected, as this can prevent the ATS from reading it.


6. Optimize for Readability: Use clear, concise language, and structure your CV so that it’s easy to scan. Use bullet points to highlight your responsibilities and achievements. Keep your CV well-organized, with consistent formatting throughout.




7. Focus on Relevant Experience: Tailor your CV to the specific job you’re applying for. Emphasize your most relevant skills and experience, making sure that these match the job description. ATS systems are designed to rank candidates based on how closely their CV matches the job requirements.


8. Don’t Use Headers and Footers: Avoid putting important information like contact details or job titles in headers and footers, as ATS software may not be able to read them. Stick to placing all your details in the main body of your CV.


9. Keep Job Titles Clear: Ensure your job titles are clear and match the industry standard. If you’ve had creative or unusual titles in the past, you might want to modify them to more standard equivalents so that the ATS can recognize them.
